笹目デポデザインコンセプト
立地の特性と背景
当該敷地は、首都高速道路の北端出入口、外環自動車道出入口、新大宮バイパスに隣接する、物流に適した利便性の高い立地に位置している。この立地は、物流輸送の要所であるとともに、市民が高速道路から市内住宅地へアクセスする際の主要な街の出入口でもある。
地域の歴史を振り返ると、1960年代以降、東京都に隣接する地の利を活かして、倉庫物流業が地場産業として発展してきた。一方、1985年以降には急激な住居地域化が進み、倉庫と住宅地が隣接する状況が生まれた。市民にとって、倉庫や工場群は日常的な景観でありながら、その無機質な外観から、「誇れるものではない」と認識されてきた。
しかし、倉庫群は地域に暮らす人々にとって、潜在的な故郷の風景の一部でもある。家族や学校行事で移動する際、帰路で目にすると「地元に帰ってきた」と感じさせるのは、この倉庫群なのである。
市民の場の記憶として
本プロジェクトでは、これまでの倉庫建物の様相を継承しつつ、市民の心に残る故郷の風景を創出することを目指した。具体的には、温もりや親しみを感じさせる杉材を使用した木組みを採用し、新たな故郷の景色として記憶に残るシンボルを目指している。この木組みは、荷解き場に木漏れ日をもたらし、明るさ調節とともに柔らかな印象を与える効果も考慮されている。
地域への誇りを取り戻す
かつて、倉庫群は殺風景な街並みとして市民に捉えられていた。しかし近年では、大手EC企業の進出や東京への翌日配送を可能にする社会インフラとして、倉庫の役割が再認識されている。これにより、若い世代を中心に地域の倉庫群に対する評価が高まりつつある。
本プロジェクトのデザインでは、市民が倉庫の景観を「無関心なもの」として捉えるのではなく、地域の景観を積極的に捉え、親しみを感じられるよう配慮した。木材の温もりを取り入れたデザインにより、地域へ新たな価値を提供している。
工場・倉庫に木材の温もりを与える意義
工場や倉庫は、ビジネス上の費用対効果を重視して設計されることが多く、それゆえ殺風景な街並み形成の一因となってきた。しかし、本プロジェクトでは木材を外装の主素材として使用することで、無機質で排他的な印象の工場・倉庫に、温もりや親しみを感じさせるデザインを実現した。この取り組みにより、街にポジティブな印象を与えることができたと考えている。
一方で、事業者にとっては、建物の強靭性や防火性、利便性、坪当たりの費用などが重要な課題である。これらの課題にも配慮しながら、市民と事業者の双方に寄り添い、愛される建物を実現することが、本プロジェクトの目指すところである。この建物が地域の資産となり、次世代に渡せる街の景色となることを期待している。（熊木英雄／OrganicDesign Inc.)
Behind the Design of Sasame Depot
Site characteristics and project background
This building is near an interchange at the north end of the Metropolitan Expressway, an interchange of the Gaikan Expressway, and the Shin-Omiya Bypass – a convenient site for distribution. Besides serving as a key distribution and shipping hub, the area is the main entrance and exit for people going between residential areas and the expressways.
Although the proximity of this area to Tokyo has driven warehousing and distribution locally since the 1960s, rapid residential expansion after 1985 led a situation with warehouses and residential areas next to each other. To residents, these warehouses and factories form part of the everyday landscape but may not inspire local pride. The scenery tends to lack a sense of human warmth.
At the same time, the warehouses are also one of the scenic elements that have the potential to make this area feel like home to those who live here. Seen from an expressway after a family or school event, the warehouses welcome residents back home.
A place that stirs local memories
In this project, we sought to create a memorable hometown landscape that retains aspects of the warehouse that once stood here. Specifically, we have created a landmark representing new hometown scenery through warm and friendly cedar timberwork. This pliant-looking wooden structure was designed to modulate brightness as sunlight filters through to the unpacking area.
Rekindling a sense of community pride
Perceptions of warehouses have changed in recent years. Once viewed by local residents as features of a monotonous landscape, they are now recognized as social infrastructure that attracts leading e-commerce companies and enables next-day deliveries in Tokyo. Especially among younger generations, this has led to a growing appreciation of local warehouses.
Through careful building design, we have avoided the indifference that people usually feel toward warehouse landscapes. Instead, the warmth of wood reveals something new to admire about the neighborhood. People can view it more positively, as a familiar part of their community.
Bringing warmth to industrial environments with wood
The general emphasis on cost-effective factory and warehouse design has contributed to bland cityscapes. In contrast, this project shows a regard for the cityscape, and the design brings warmth and familiarity to an industrial environment that might otherwise look cold and uninviting. As an example of design that benefits the general public who do not necessarily use this facility, it also gives people a more positive impression of the city.
For the business operator, key issues included robustness, fire resistance, convenience, and cost per unit of area. While responding to these needs, we created a building that will be appreciated by the business operator and residents alike. We hope it becomes an asset to the community that people will want to pass down to future generations as part of the local scenery.
